Big airplane flying very low through Crawford Notch
« on: June 10, 2019, 12:13:02 AM »
Was climing on Mt Webster Sunday when I suddenly see a rather big airplane (10-20 windows wide?) flying really low through Crawford Notch, meaning well below the mountain summits. It was all gray and I didn't notice any markings. I never seen anything like that before in that area. Is that common or what could it had been? I wish I was faster getting my phone out to get a pic.

You will see military planes flying in the notches rather low. Saw three A-10ís a few years ago that flew thought the notch and over Williard. They were 80-100 feet above the trees.

Probably a C130. They fly through on occasion. When The fighter jets go through forget all communication with your belayer for a few.

I used to see the A 10s flying through the Baker River Valley while climbing at Rumney. According to a friend/Air National Gaurd pilot the A 10s have to stay no more than 500 ft off the ground. Because of the relatively slow speed, the higher they are they become an easy target. They are also restricted from going into the Pemi Wilderness Area because of certain endangered species.
