what do you guys think?
« on: October 28, 2002, 10:41:39 AM »

i'm thinking of checking out the ravines next weekend. Judging by the forecast, ice should only be forming. There is also a somewhat decent snowpack which should increase through the week as more snow is forecasted for wed-thurs. I think there just might be a chance to get some climbs in on saturday. If not, I'll at least check it out.

anyone have any more specific info?

Rob W was up on Sunday Oct 27 and reported two good lines in Tuckerman Ravine. He and partner climbed one in three pitches.  Grey day and windy above the lip, but he's stoked.

We climbed Central in Huntington on 10/27 and there was a line with 2-4" of ice approximately 3-5' wide that was well bonded. The middle variation in O'Dell's looked doable but the bottom is now filled with snow. Yale looked thin but doable, the bottom pitch was formed and there was ice showing on the upper two bulges. The start to Diagonal looked the fattest of anything.

I'm not at all surprised that there is ice to climb. the rain on Friday and Sat dumped a lot of moisture up on the mountain. there is lready a foot up there by this AM (Monday). with the solidaly cold temps at night there is no reason for there not to be ice to climb.

I'll be checking out Frankenstein in the next couple of days & report back on Thursday. I'll also be trying & get up to Tucks on Friday as well.

looks like we're starting to happen boys & girls.  ;D

It really felt like winter up in Tucks sunday, The ice on the left side of the ravine was definitly better than the right but its still a bit away from "in". The three pitch climb Rob and I did was just left of the big overhang. There was also two people ahead of us that got to use thier ice axes in october and they were as stoked as us. I really hope we have a winter this year. It seems to be starting off that way. I also heard that somebody has done the Dike this year?? If so is that the first time it has ever been done in october??

I was up in tuck's on sunday too...conditions were definitely wintery.  Talked to some guys who did central...said it was mostly snow, but fun.  I'm going to try to get up and do some climbing this weekend, in one of the ravines...

Yes, the Dike has been done, three times already according to a couple of people I talked to.  It's supposedly even taking 13cm screws the whole way up!

I think that this is one of, if not the earliest that the Dike has been done. I remember Doug Millan trying to get it done before Halloween and that being a big deal or something...

Yes,
Over beers last friday night (Oct. 25), a few friends told me of their dike climb that day. Pretty impressive that winter is coming this early.

I spoke with Jon Sykes this evening, Tuesday. He said that he and a friend had done it today and there were several parties there including Will Mayo. One party did both the Dike and Fafnir!
