i was up there yesterday climbing in tucks and alot of the ice is rotten, mostly higher on the headwall. there are some good areas  but not many and will be taken up by only a few people. it was really warm as well, hermit lake was apprx. 28deg @ 1pm!! i saw one party climbing and water spurted out when he planted his axe. just want to give eveyone a heads up for the weekend.

dogboy and I were in Huntington today, Saturday. it was extremely warm in the ravine & even in the Alpine Garden. we did Pinnacle. the hike up from the fan was a real slog, lots of postholing and soft snow. it took a loooong time. there really wweren't a lot of folks up there. there was one soloist before us. he had done Pinnacle & then downclimbed Central & then headed over to Odells. there was a lot of water running under the ice on Pinnacle. P1 was ok, but there was open areas. p2 was a snow slog & the belay was at the only ice, in the middle of the gully. p3 was very tricky with a lot of open areas & rotten snow. god help you if you fall thru the snow/ice into the water. we went on up to the right & to the Alpine Garden. then over to Lions Head & down.

all in all a nice day, but the warm temps make for trickey climbing. be careful folks!!!

Jesse B and I were on Pinnacle too on Saturday, we also saw the same soloist on his way up to Central. Maybe you were the party ahead of us?

so THATS where the third belay is supposed to be huh...well, we ended up simuling the rest of the gully after pitch 1, J putting in 2 screws along the way. The screws weren't too bad and with tracks ahead of us it wasn't that hard; that plastic ice at the very end was nice! The water was sketchy, though...

yeah, that was us. I looked at the belay you were on at first but it looked too tricky to get to. usually there is enought snow & ice to make it OK. I thought that the upper 2 pitches were mine fields. it would be a major D R A G to bust thru. the final ice on the right at the end was very nice, I agree...

it should be OK after the weather gest cold again tho. maybe even by next weekend.
