where is everybody climbing?
« on: January 13, 2003, 10:20:12 AM »
almost every time I've been out this season it seems as if there isn't anyone about. I was at the Frankenstein Amphitheatre on Thursday and it was empty. friends were there over the weekend & said there were cars but it wasn't all that busy. it used to be that there wre waiting lines on Cinema and Hitchcock. it doesn't seem to be that way right now.

where is everyone climbing?

Hi Al,
I  checked out an Ice Climbing area local to me in New Glouscter, Maine. It is building and there are a number of lines available. I would not pass up a day in the Whites to go there but it is good for a morning pump on the small top rope able climbs and ice bouldering. There are some 40ft grade 4/5 columns that are building. Though they need more moisture. I have climbed up north only a couple of times this season. It has been quiet for me out there also.

It was brutal.  We soloed the first pitch up to the main ice bulge.  Then climbed the second pitch, and when I reached the belay we both knew that was it and made an interesting traverse off to the left to the last available tree.  Then the rope jammed after the first rap, and my partner had to go back up for that, then,  as we neared the truck he realized he dropped his sunglasses and had to go back(found em at the bottom of cinema).  A classic day of ice climbing.

sounds like a "fun" day. <grin> it was cold on Thursday as well, but in the sun & moving fast it wasn't all that bad.

I was at Frankenstein today, Saturday, with an AMC group. there were more cars in the lot & on the road than I've seen in a while. there still weren't all that many people in the Amphitheatre. it seemed that they were scattered all over. some on White Russian, tons in Walk in the Forest, it looked as if there were some up to the right of Fang, and of course many parties on Standard. must have been a couple of groups up at Arethusa as well. in spite of being cold, it was a great day of climbing. and in the sun it wasn't all that bad.
