Renowned ice climber missing
« on: June 04, 2006, 10:10:49 PM »
ALASKA - A well-known climber from Vail, and her climbing partner, are
missing in Denali National Park.

Vail resident Sue Nott, and Karen McNeill from Alberta, were climbing
together along a difficult route in Alaska.

They started their most recent technical climb on Mt. Foraker on May 14th.

The two women had expected to finish the route in ten days.  Fellow climbers
became worried on Thursday, when a search for the climbers was started.

Cloud cover on the mountains is causing problems for searchers, and they
have found some troubling clues.

Maureen McLaughlin, with Denali National Park says, "Probably one of the
things that is most concerning is that we found a backpack yesterday morning
with a couple items from it strewn a couple hundred yards.  We found that at
the base of the route, and we did confirm that it belongs to them, the pack
definitely came from a higher elevation it was ripped and definitely had
taken a bit of a tumble."

Last year, Nott and McNeill successfully climbed a difficult ridge and
reached the summit in Denali.

Nott and McNeill are believed to be the only two climbers on Mt. Foraker
right now.

This post certainly does not make me feel very good. The search has been suspended for Sue and Karen and a memorial service scheduled for this Sunday the 18th in Vail, Co. Let's remember thier family's as they are left behind with a huge hole in thier lives that can never be filled.

I think that the following 2 quotes from the latest NPS press release pretty much sum things up:

1) After a thorough analysis of the situation and in light of the predicted weather, search managers today have determined that a continued focused search effort will not provide any different results from what has been obtained to date and have decided to suspend active search operations.

2) It is believed that even if the two climbers had all of the fuel containers with them, assuming none were in the backpack that was discovered at the base of the avalanche chute, it would only have lasted 18 days under the best of conditions... In the best case scenario, Nott and McNeill have had no water for ten days.

miracles notwithstanding I would say it's pretty likely that they are done for. very sad...
