rap knot for 2 different sized ropes
« on: April 15, 2003, 05:46:52 PM »

I've been using an overhand w/ stopper as my rap knot in the winter using 8.8mm half ropes.

I've have a 10mm lead rope for rock climbing and just picked up a 7.8mm static rap line.  Looking for input on a knot for joining these ropes for rapping.

I'd use a triple fisherman's for ropes of such different diameter.  If they were closer...say 1 or 1.5 mm...the overhand is probably fine.  But that's quite a difference, and it's probably better to stick with the fisherman's....

I have used an overhand 8 for years when joining a 10.2mm and an 8mm.  When pulled tight, it flips over a bit and I have never had major problems with it getting caught up after being pulled.

overhands are the way to go, just make sure you leave long tails so when it does roll over it doesn't untie.

I use the Sheet bend knot with double fisherman backup that,s way the sheet bend take all the stress and it is very easy to untie also these type of knot are the strongest there is
For same diameter rope I use the square knot with double fisherman backup for the same reasons
