need some advice
« on: November 20, 2001, 03:09:21 PM »

thinking of just going up to the Great Gulf on Thursday, maybe up Jefferson via Six Husbands. What do you guys think about it? Should i bring plastics/crampons? Seems like the rocks above treeline may be real icy with the recently colder weather, on the other hand there isn't much snow...

I wouldn't hike that without carrying crampons. just too much of a risk of encountering icy conditions.

IMCS is NOT open on Thanksgiving!

Got to agree with Al...at this time of year crampons are pretty much required anywhere above treeline.  Not to say you might not need them...but better to be safe than sorry!

thanks for the advice guys.

I'm back from the thanskgiving day trip - the hike was great, needless to say we had the entire Great Gulf wilderness to ourselves, as everyone was home eating turkey and getting drunk :) The crampons and axe did in fact come in very handy, esp. on the Sphinx trail and the upper part of the Great Gulf trail, above 3,000 foot elevation. It was quite icy up there, and the sphinx trail is very steep in some parts. We hit Clay from the Sphinx col and then headed back to the wilderness parking lot - a really long and rough thrash, more than half of it in the dark with headlamps...

Actually above treeline the crampons were not required for the most part - conditions were either snow or rocks.

Glad you had a good trip...and it is always nice to have the right gear when you need it!  'Course, there's probably not all that much ice up there now, with all the warm weather we've had, but you never can tell...
