CM Turbine
« on: December 26, 2001, 02:39:58 PM »

several people I know swear by the Turbine. it's a crank device that you use to give more leverage when you're placing an ice screw. my old ice partner, Yuki Fujita, thinks it's wonderful. he got one a few years ago & uses it all the time. recently I've been hanging with Mark Synnott & he uses one as well. he says it really helps on very steep climbs when the act of turning the screw into the ice can be really exhausting. he also says that the CM screws work especially well with it, but I've never seen them available. the cost is only $20 & I've been thinking a lot about getting one.

Al:

Last season I hooked up with a French climber that was working in NH for six months.  He used CM Laser screws and the Turbine and swore by it.  I tried it a few times and must admit that once you get the hang of it you can really drill those screws home in the hardest of NE ice.  Far more leverage than the BD Expresses.  I would definitely consider it for water ice climbs.  But the mountaineer in me objects to lugging along such a specialized piece of gear!
