accidents recently?
« on: February 11, 2011, 09:38:30 am »
I heard that there was an accident on Dracula the other day... anyone have the details. there was blood on the tracks at the start of the hike up to the climb.

also, I went through Crawford Notch Thursday morning at around 10:15 and there was what looked like fresh blood all over the start of Elephant Head. bright red stuff too...

I spoke to one of the party members of the Dracula incident the day it happened, basically a very "athletic" but not to experienced ice climber got pumped near the top of the route, and could not place/clip his last screw (only the 4th). He took a 40 footer, and from what I heard walked out with a cracked cranium and some soft tissue damage but otherwise ok. Discharged next day type injury. Hoping he (his crew) forwards the details to ANAM.

The way that gully funnels down to the road, my guess would be that someone took a shot to the chops from falling ice. The bottom of the route can be the equivalent of a giant crushed ice machine...especially if you stand in the center and not off to the side! ;)

Somewhat amusing that it has a name and is in a guide book. Seeems like only about a half step more than a road cut boulder problem......
