I bet they are glad they didn't have the New Haven FD trying to rescue them.

It is so much easier to go up than down sometimes....until you're screwed. I haven't gotten into that spot climbing but I have in some adventures in the Winter. The hard part about this rescue is that 25 years ago they would have spent a crummy night on the wall and then either finished the route at first light or rapped out. I'm not sure which would teach them more.

THat's why I always pack a folding aluminum ladder with me whenever i do more than one pitch. I have saved a lot of gear that way...  ;D

I’d ask you go easy on these guys and remember we all fuck up once in awhile. These guys were sincerely embarrassed when the saw how many people were working to get them off the cliff at 1AM, and looked for opportunities to help with the final haul and gear break down. Good kids, bad decision that day. All worked out well.

Dman, I was accustomed to:

BUT...

My question is did she have a map & compass? A quick look at the compass from the summit would have pointed her in the right direction, and even if she didn't locate the packed out trail she could have been back to the road in an hour or three rather than spending the night doing jumping jacks.

How did you came so kind for someone in a rescue situation...was it you???

it is a joke!!!

Al, they didn't rap because there is a service provided to rescue people who make bad decisions and get in over their heads.
All they needed to do was to make a call and presto, like magic they get rescued. If there was no service, they would have rapped.

Inexperience, they had rap, but had made mistake.

ignorance, they don't know how and the summit look like a pitch over.

They just need that some one gave them a rope, as it is done in sport climbing, so they can jug to the top.

Agree with Champ here... I think they kept pushing it because “the top’s right there right”. I really wish I asked them why they didn’t just rap... it often takes a day or two after a rescue to realize what question really should have been asked. I’m hoping they find their way to this forum to shed some light, but I can imagine them being hesitant to appear.

I’m thinking it wouldn’t even take much gear to rap Moby with 2 ropes given the amount of tat and fixed anchors on route... definitely inexperience played a part...

All the needed was Alan Cattabriga to go soloing by at high speed to really top off their day of embarrasment, lol

Didn't it say they had a rope get caught? That may have had something to do with why they didn't rap off.
