How brutal is it, or can mere mortals of advanced age (59) handle it?

In my experience if you have to ask or find yourself wondering then it is gonna hurt. If it was not gonna be a problem you would know it and have no need to ask.

I raced bikes pro for a few years. I started riding again this summer after not riding for like 4 years and!! A few years ago i would have done that ride as one of my once a week training rides. However now that ride would hurt like hell and i 35 this Saturday so take it for what it's worth. I say go do it as arn't  endurance sports about suffering. Hurt feels sooooo good isn't that why we do them?  That will be a sweet ride regardless!!

Have fun!! I am jealous my tendinosis will not let me ride 100 miles  if i wanna be climbing ice in a few weeks...

I've done that ride many times, most recently last fall. I'm 64 and frankly it's not all that bad. the hardest part is the pull over the Kanc. the ride up teh bike path in Franconia is very mild and the ride from there to Crawford Notch is flat. then it's all downhill to Attitash. it doesn't say if you ride over Bear Notch to get to the Kanc, or through North Conway and up the Kanc from Conway Village. I would say it's probably the latter.

Five years ago that ride was part of my weekly training too...then climbing took over my life.  I agree with Al, the hardest part is the pull over the Kanc and the rest is fairly easy.  My advice is to make sure you're getting some longer rides in (80 miles or so) for the month prior to the ride.  Maybe go ride the Kanc so you can be prepared mentally.  That always helped me if I was stressed about an unknown race course.
