I'm sure there will still be bits of ice hanging over any of the regular climbs on Cathedral or Whitehorse. that said I will bet that once things dry out, Humphrey's will be good to go!

I'm waiting until the fog starts to burn off to head up to the Notch. I can't see Cathedral Ledge from my house or even from the chalets, so there is no reason to go yet.

If you're out climbing this weekend, please post your observations. things were horrible yesterday and my understanding is that while some things were OK today, some were marginal.

Thanks

We got 3-4" of heavy wet snow this morning, temps up to almost 40 in the Valley this afternoon, temps plummeting now. supposed to drop to 8-10 overnight and be cold for a couple of daze. there is ice everywhere in the woods, crampons and/or Microspikes are essential just for getting around. on Tuesday the road to Cathedral was a solid sheet of ice, as was the hike uphill to the start of Thresher. be careful wandering around folks. a slip could really ruin your day!

The ice was in 5 start condition just about everywhere this weekend but the  outlook for the next two weeks make me thing it's going to be an early end.... :P

Al, you were speculating that humphrys would be good after some warmth. Do you think there will be much in the way of hanging/ lingering ice on the South Buttress WH on Saturday?

usually the South Buttress is all clear very early. you just need to look carefully from the road before you go.

Decided to hit Whitehorse for the first climb of the season this morning.  We were at the base of Standard around 0845, it looked wet over around Beginners and possibly C-M but didn't walk over to confirm.  Standard *looked* dry, at least up to the lunch ledge when we pulled in.  While we were racking up we noticed some ice pellets cascading down.  By the time we got to the launch pad, it was more constant.  I don't remember if I was at the toilet bowl or the crystal pocket, but at one of those 2 belays I looked up and saw water running over the edge to the left of the lunch ledge.  Once I could see the thread belay above the pocket (about 40-50' off the belay), I could see it was centered in the running water, the wet streak was about 8' wide.  So, a downclimb was about my only option at that point.

By the time we were back at the bowl, the wet streak was below the level of the pocket and extending down further by the minute.

There's dry stuff on WH though!

yes, I'm sure that there are dry spots, but there is still some icy stuff up high and hidden. I would guess that things should be a lot better after the warm rains on Monday night & Tuesday.

Was up on South Buttress Saturday. Nice and dry, but beware bees spotted...in April. Didn't notice any major nest, but there were a few buzzing about on Hotter Than Hell. Old nest is still in its hiding place on Inferno. Be careful where you jam...

Think Standard Route on Whitehorse will be dry this Sunday if there's no rain between now and then?
