about 3" of snow overnight here in the Valley at 7:30AM. not sure when/if it's going top turn to rain/sleet/slush/mix. heading out to guide in a few minutes...

what a strange day... started out with freezing rain at 8, then full-on rain at 9:30 driving up into Crawford Notch, then big snowflakes hiking into Lost In The Forest with 11 scouts & 2 scout-masters, the snow stopped when we got up to the climb, then around 11 it started warming up & clearing, by 2:30 it was clear with patches of cloud/fog across the valley and we could occasionally see Mt Washington, then as we were leaving it totally cleared off, it was sunny and 40 as we passed Attitash, then as we turned onto west Side Road there was a 500' layer of cloud laying across the Valley and it was very humid. as we went past Cathedral Ledge you could not even see the cliff! according to my wife it had been like that all day in the MWV and the power had even gone off for an hour. right now at 5:45 it's cloudy/foggy and 39 degrees.

Agreed strange day in the notch. I did notice a rather large and young group while looking down off of Standard. What a beautiful day it ended up being thought ehy. Imagine people stayed home and opted out of that one;)

The fog rolling along the top of the cliffs just moments after giant snow flakes was exactly what makes climbing so freakin awesome imop..

I got out for a nice 15 mile ride on my bike for the first time in a while. it was sweet... hoping for a 3 sport day tomorrow: Elephant Head or equivalent, xc ski down Mt Clinton Road and bike from Willey House to top of Crawford Notch & back. can't miss out on these days...

Now that sounds like fun. I got off the trainer yesterday and go tout for about 15-20 miles on the road bike myself. Wish i had the Climb Ride Ski option. Soon the water will warm up and i will be able to do the swim, climb, run, ride thing but it just is not the same as having ice and snow.

What are the current (March 8th 2012) conditions on Cathedral? I would like to climb some 5.6 - 5.8 routes but I am concerned that everything will be wet. Can some please tell me that my assumption is wrong. Does anyone have insight as to what will be dry this sunday at the about mentioned grade?

Elliot,

It's not in the valley but,  Rock Rimmon has tons of climbs at the grade.   As of yesterday, it's mostly dry.  By Sunday it'll be dry as a biscuit.

Your assumption is dead on Elliot, unfortunately things are going to be wet for a while at Cathedral. There is still a lot of ice and snow above the routes that one needs to consider as well, even when the majority of the routes down low dry out. I think DWT's suggestion is a good one. Now sure what Humphrey's is looking like or how much junk is above melting out now, but being south facing, that tends to dry out a bit earlier than Cathedral. Plenty of moderates over there to keep you busy.

I was at the North End today and it was still OK, going fast, but OK. the slab looked fine as well, but I didn't check out Thresher.

Skipped out on Frankenstein today as i figured the lines could be nuts and options few.

Hope to get two days in this week regardless, looks like i will be taking more than one long ass walk but i am keeping my fingers crossed we have the place to out lonesome. If the ice is good and people few or none i will walk as far as i have to this time of year.

the third drizzly/raw day. starting to make me a bit crazy since I can't even ride the bike - or I don't WANT to ride in this weather. [sigh] the only positive thing is that it's helping to clear some of the ice & snow off the cliffs. but now it's going to take a couple of sunny days to dry things off again. looks like next week will be nice tho...

I love it when it is like that, first time we did the Presidential traverse in winter we woke up (illegally) at the Edmunds Col shelter to those conditions.  Undercast, bright sun, NO wind - SWEET!
