yeah, there are a bazillion 'largest pieces of exposed granite in the world.' As anyone from GA can tell you, Stone Mt. (the one in GA,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Mountain with the carvings of R.E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Jeff Davis on it, not the one in NC) is the 'largest piece of exposed granite in the world'. It's all crap. (Although it is true that the carving is bigger than Rushmore's). Unfortunately, you can't climb on the one in GA, or you can, but last I checked it was a $500 fine, a night in jail, and--worst of all--equipment confiscated. Supposedly Gill put up some routes on the vertical north side (where the carving is) while he was at Tech, and you can still see some ancient 1/4" studs. It takes all of 2 min. on flat ground to approach the base. They banned climbing because rednecks would see climbers on the lower angle slabs on the S side and say, 'sheeeit, hold my beer, I kin climb that.' Then it gets a hair steeper up high and end of redneck.
