accidents
« on: January 20, 2002, 10:45:09 AM »

I heard that there was an ice climber from or with ties to New England who was killed in early January. does anyone have any details of the accident?

in addition there was a serious acident on Cave Route at Frankenstein on Friday. the injuries were severe, a smashed leg and possible broken pelvis. if anyone has any additional details I would appreciate the info. you can email me privately if you like. I keep track of these things for the AINAM.

I will not use anyone's names if they don't want me to. I just want to get the info for the statistics.

thanks

Al

I had not heard about the Cave Route accident, but am not too surprised.  I tried it just over a week ago and backed off half way up.  I managed to get a semi-ok piton and then bottomed out a short screw about half way in.  Finally down-climbed off the pin.

I did hear this past weekend that Ron Beal broke his leg walking off Arethusa Falls about a week or two ago.  The walk off is pretty steep and perhaps he lost his footing.  He was not actually climbing when it happened.

Just heard the story of the Arethusa Falls accident from the horse's mouth.  He was walking off, not glissading, and took a tumble.  Caught his crampon points and broke his leg.  The break required 8 screws and a plate.  Boy is he gonna have trouble getting through the metal detector at the airport...
