What is it?
« on: February 03, 2013, 11:25:08 PM »

Ok, I know I'm a relative noob, but what the heck is the " large wedge-type anchor" in this eBay listing?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/251223789541?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

For reference, after the listing ends, this should be the pic:

I wondered if it was a snow anchor, but thought it was somewhat odd that it was in with some climbing nuts.

Thanks.

It's called a 'deadman' for a reason.

Oh no you guys....you got it all wrong....

Its obviously an "Avalanche Kite"

It was an early safety device for avalanche terrain travel.
These were clipped on the back of the harness and in the event of an avy or slide it
was meant to create drag as an assist during self arrest
Legend has it that its creator was a guy named Matt Erhorn who had taken up climbing
after serving in WWII as a Naval Aviator.  Apparently he got the idea from the tail hooks
in common use on aircraft carrier planes.  The idea never gained widespread use and has
     thus faded into obscurity.    ;)

Whatever you do, don't buy it.
I have one in my basement that you can have. I haven't used it since 1982.
I'll throw in a 24" picket as well.
