What's the liner for?

Why should you line your haul bag?  I've seen everything from cardboard, to sleeping pads, to plastic real estate signs.  What's the function of the liner? Thanks gents!

It's to prevent a sharp corner from something inside the bag from projecting through the fabric, creating a potential wear point.  A smooth bag exterior hauls better, wears less, and is easier to dig around in.

It also protects any sharp edges on the rock from damaging the contents, especially water bottles.
