Accident on Cathedral - Nutcracker
« on: August 21, 2013, 02:23:52 PM »

I meant to mention that 2 weeks ago, Saturday the 10th, there was an accident on Cathedral. Apparently a climber in his mid-to-late 20's was leading Nutcracker on the Barber Wall when he fell. At least one of his pieces pulled allowing him to hit his head and almost hit the ground.

The Mountain Rescue Service mobilized and after a 2+ hour effort got him to the top a little before dark. He was then transported to memorial Hospital by ambulance. I haven't heard anything more about his condition, but the assessment at the scene was that he had a head and arm injuries.

Does anyone have any additional information?

someone on FB asked if he was wearing a helmet. I don't know, but based on the fact that he had cuts on his head I would say probably not... [sigh]

He probably swing head down first? As for loose block, it is a bad think to just go for it in trad but a good think to do so in sport. How can a beginner without at least 100 meter of aid climbing and following a year between a good leader can think that they can climb a 5.9- 5.10 as hard as nutcracker because 5.9 is beginner in sport???? I saw some guy trying the route without even a small knowledge of what is a layback or a fist jam.

You guide bring the level of climbing as high as in Quebec!!! and it is not good words. Make the difference between sport and trad as nothing like that will occur as frequently as this year.
