Surprised no one reported here:

From NEIce:

"Alfonzo, Katie Ives and I  figured the best bet for ice would be King Ravine. The aspect is perfect for early season ice. We were right. Not a lot of ice, but real ice climbing. Leaf and Joel also found good ice to climb in King Ravine.

DSCN2892
Odell’s Gully / Climbike
Climbike and partner climbed Odell’s Gully with “Psychological pro only”.  They reported climbers on Yale as well.

The Black dike was climbed Saturday under very marginal conditions.  Leave the screws at home.

Pinnacle gully was climbed Saturday by Gaddshady and partner, they found “tenuous ice and dry tooling”.

I heard about Pinnacle. all this is basically soloing or rock climbing for the most part. not for the faint of heart, that's for sure. looks like it's going to stay chilly for a while so we might be able to get in some good early season ice that's actually protectable soon. maybe Tucks in a week!

OhhhTay...

call me wimpy, but King Ravine sure looked like nothing but blobs, turf and unbonded veneer. the last thing I would call it is "Pretty darn good looking!" YMMV

Well Al you got the mostly unbounded ice and frozen turf right but it sure felt a lot like ice climbing to me a after 6 months on th rock. Plus kings can not be beat imop as unlike cannon, cathedral or Crawford although you can see the traffic you can not hear it this really feeling like you are in the woods. Imop that is well worth the price of admission of frozen turf and long walks.

When I was climbing in King Ravine on Saturday, I found the ice to be well-bonded.  But that's not going to be the point of my reply.

Ice climbing for me is not defined by the thickness of the ice.  I relate climbing to adventure.  I prefer the complexities and variety of early season climbing over mid-winter conditions.  I choose to head out into the mountains at a time when the cold air just begins to take hold, when the excitement of winter starts to set in..  when finding ice is far from guaranteed, when conditions are constantly changing and when I'm able to climb in places that are covered by snow 90% of the winter months.  It brings a feeling of discovery and new experiences to a place I've been going to for a long time.  It's a time that I can be alone in a vast ravine with no others around and feel like I have the mountain range all to myself.

I'm far from crazy.  It's not a matter of 'being a wimp' or in the opposite spectrum, 'being risky'.  I'm a conservative climber.  I just give a broader definition to climbing.  Moving upwards, exploring, adventuring.  It allows me to go out and see what I find.  And then see if I'm comfortable climbing what I find.  Being the mountains during the changing of seasons is unique and special and I would encourage everyone to look past these strict definitions of what "ice climbing" is.

An article I wrote last year on the topic:
http://neice.com/2013/01/a-season-within-a-season/

Cheers,
Courtney

guys.... I'd say that I'm not all that conservative in my own ice climbing. I've soloed most of the stuff at Frankenstein and lots more, I just like to be able to actually swing a tool and get a good stick. [grin]

I really do hear you about the adventure part of climbing. it's really cool to be somewhere that you have it all to yourself. I've had lots of days on Webster, Tucks and Huntington, and even Frankenstein, where I haven't seen a soul. there's nothing quite like it.
