Anyone like BIG TREES?
« on: November 06, 2013, 05:54:22 PM »

I've always loved big trees.

My wife and I went to visit this grove of White Pine trees, up in Tamworth last week, off of 113.

It's a State Park:

It's a wild place, with many really big trees. There was one old growth White Pine, that survived--only one.

At breast height, ( where their measured), it had a DIAMETER of 7 feet, with a huge butt log, that hardly tapered at all!
Second largest White Pine in the country.
The NATIONAL champion is only a little larger, and is in Keene, NH.

I checked this area out in May... awesome natural area! Didn't see the old growth White Pine, will definitely go back to find it....

My blog post from hiking that day with my 1.5 year old:

I love seeing big trees.  They always make me feel real small!  I'm an arborist working out of Tamworth and I will have to check this one out. Thanks for the info.

I'll have to check it out as well. Spent a few hours in trees hanging on a rope, got a feeling a 7' dbh pine will be as close as I get to the giant sequoias out west for a while!

I've been seeing some bull pines out in the woods on my MTB rides lately. I saw one over between Starks and Davis Hills the other day. it was amazingly big and really wide. this is on the land that Tin Mountain bought a year or so ago. there is a gated logging road a little north of the State Line Store on the opposite side of the road. you enter there and go up the logging road a couple of hundred yards. it's on the right. it's really impressive.
