Yup... sounds like a perfect example of self-sufficency all climbers should strive for.
A good climber can self-rescue himself, in my opinion.
It is what he did. If there is no danger to fall, why should we use a rope?
Yes, a good climber is self-sufficient, but not Superman. If the same fall resulted in a broken femur I think outside assistance would be prudent if not necessary to save a life. It’s up to each victim to determine if they can reasonably self-rescue given the extent of injury and remoteness of the incident... sometimes asking for help is the best idea, and sometimes self-rescue is best... just sayin’, excellent climbers may need outside help but are still “good climbers”.
Not sure what the comment about the rope is... you didn’t provide any context with that...
EDIT: Oh, on 2nd read I get it... you are saying that falling (and resulting injury) is always a possibility... agreed. Especially on hard Grade 5 IMO... a broken ankle or tib-fib is probably the leading ice climbing injury far & wide...
