I'm pretty sure the only "duty" in this scenario lies with the one who just sent his kid up on a frozen waterfall without really knowing what to do.
(We all make mistakes, of course.)

Sure, the dad is the person responsible for the kid's safety and is doing a bad job. If you saw the same guy in the parking lot telling his son to move a downed power line that was sparking so they could get their truck out of their parking space, you'd say something, right?

It's no different. It's not anyone's job to convince the guy, to stop the guy, or to educate the guy on safer behavior. I'm not proposing that anyone act like a white knight: only to say something.

"Hey wait, don't take him off belay, that could get him killed!" is all.
We came to climb, not to whine.

You don't let someone die because you didn't want to argue with his dad.

You don't let someone die because you didn't want to argue with people on the forum!!!!

Awesome that this is still being talked about. I'll consider it my finest post to date.

It seems that the consensus is to say something humorous, offer advice, then back off and watch the show, knowing that your conscience will be clear if something happens after that.

The simplest thing to do would have been to shout out not to take the kid off belay, and the danger that w/could cause. As usual, the simplest answer seems to be the correct one.

Now, I expect all of you to be shouting at stupid people this weekend!  ;)

Shouting probably wouldn't be the best thing unless you had to. It could startle the kid into falling and is going to get the dad immediately in a defensive attitude, less willing to take advice.

Fuck'm..punch the asshole in the nuts..that will get attention. Stupidity is often only challenged with direct action.

I told a guy at Cathedral once " shit, I'll be drivin' the BMW if you keep this up"...they need to know and being subtle doesn't work
