Katahdin: Feb 22 - Mar 1, 2014
« on: March 03, 2014, 09:45:11 am »
Our big winter adventure at Baxter State Park and Mt Katahdin. The temperature the week we were there was never higher than +5F and was as low as -20F when we climbed Cilley-Barber.

Spending the week in a lean-to was an interesting experience, subjecting your body, cloths and equipment to continuous subzero degrees (F) for a week straight. Needless to say, not too many other people were around and we pretty much had the area for ourselves.

Lots of pictures and comments (you don't need a FB account to see):

We were in the bunk house - saw your lights bobbing on the ridge - a bit worried but we learned you did just fine. Kudos.

We had an awesome time. First time in winter for me (and first time ever for my friends). Yes, now afterwards we may have been a little nuts staying in the lean-to all week. But it was a great experience! Seems most other ones were empty or only visited for a night or so. No idea why? :)

Nice Job!  What did you do with your boots at night?  In the bag?

We didn't do anything special with our boots (or other gear). They did get a little frozen and had to be massaged a little to get the feet in :)

But you put the liners in your sleeping bags, right?

We used regular Nepal leather boots. No liners. Just kept it simple.

Tried that one time winter mountaineering. I didn't like the full boot in the sleeping bag myself.
