« on: March 19, 2016, 09:22:31 AM »
this analysis is well worth the read:

http://www.mountwashingtonavalanchecenter.org/2016/03/18/accident-summary-march-13-2016/

note that the 2 accidents were in different locations, but the 2 parties involved had met earlier in the day!

I am not being critical, but I am wondering if he had health insurance? I do understand that the cost of a medivac is incredibly expensive.

I hear what you are saying Al but (at the risk of sounding critical) I think it is fine to ask for help for medical costs BUT when we venture into the mountains there are always risks. Stuff happens even under perfect conditions. I always assume that those of us that play in the mountains understand those risks and are willing to assume (including costs) the risks involved otherwise we would stay at home and watch football on weekends.

He has gotten almost $40,000 in three days, pretty impressive.  Good luck to him and his family.

And as Al says, the analysis is a must read.

Kind of moot. I have a "great" plan through my employer but I'm pretty sure most insurance plans will only cover a portion of air ambulance bills. It was on nightly news the other night how private med-flight companies charge up to 40k for one flight... and "insurance" might cover 20% of that...

My  med flight for heart was $35K  insurance picked up $7500..the rest is based on income.  I other words they can't make you pay all the diff and can't hit retirement or real estate holdings.

So we are back where we were pre-Obama care.   Insured, or uninsured, you still need to pay the bill...or make them eat it.

Just another reason to horde cash. Or better yet gold.

Ward, my insurance is paid for by my employer and since obamcare went into effect I have gone backwards and my coverage now sucks! I would love to return to the days before 0bamacare. (The policy has not changed, just what it covers.)

Before:
My employer paid 100% of the premium
Now:
I have to pick up any increases in premium, they now take 70$ a week from my check!

Before:
no deductible
Now:
2000$ deductible

before:
everything paid 100% after a 10$ co-payment
Now:
Many services only covered at 50% or 80%

All obamacare has done for me is cost me a lot of money and decreased my benefits.

So your employer cut your benefits and somehow that's the fault of o'care?

i think this is the definition of a non sequitur...

Not really.  Obamacare did nothing to reign in drug costs, that is why the drug companies were all for it.  Since then, even some generics have increased a hundred fold (aided by licenses given to only a single drug company courtesy the FDA), making insurers refuse to pay.

One out of four prescriptions are not filled due to the cost incurred on the consumer.

A single payer plan (not that I'm for it as a libertarian) would have at least dealt with drug costs.

The fact that all the drug companies were on board with Obama care should give you a good idea of how much money it will "save."
