2016 Peregrine cliff closures?
« on: April 15, 2016, 08:03:43 PM »
I am planning a week in NH (end of April) and am wondering if there are any cliff closures due to Peregrines. I recall the Barber Wall, and Rumney Main Wall, being closed in past years. I can't find any state wildlife info either. What do you know?

At Rumney, currently the high North Westerly crags are closed, but there is no bird activity at the Main Cliff this year so that is open.

Edit to add Jeffrey LeCour's comment from MP: "  "From Chris Martin (Audubon Society):

"The closure currently posted is for Summit, Yellowknife, and Monolith. It probably should say Crows Nest, too. Because the 2016 peregrine nest location has shifted to the east side of Yellowknife, both Asylum and Prudential are currently not posted closed"  "

Thanks M_Sprague. That's the sort of info I was looking for. Anyone have an update on birds nesting on Cathedral?

The first time I did Whitesides in '87 there were no falcons, or at least falcon closures, in NC. On the wall we heard that shriek a few times, and when we got near the top we saw one fly by and thought, 'uh-oh.' Sure enough, when we topped out FS rangers armed with binoculars were running about excitedly. Right then a bird flew by and Mark turns to me and says, 'You never have a shotgun when you need one.'
If you're gonna be stupid, you gotta be tough.

I've been asking about closures, but haven't heard anything yet. I saw a peregrine flying above Cathedral on Tuesday, but only one.

Was thinking about climbing the Eaglet and happened to see this comment on Mountain Project this morning:

CONDITION REPORT     Heads Up! The Eaglet is closed for Peregrine Falcon nesting through Aug 1, 2016. We walked up the trail about 200 yards on Sunday before seeing the posting, so thought it would be good to share.
