As usual, Michael, you hit the nail on the head! Building such a structure IS going back in time to when Man felt the need to TAME Nature, to exploit her for profit. That has been done far too much, for far too long, and many of us now understand that untamed Nature brings us something irreplaceable, speaking to our very souls. We must join together to preserve what remains of the Wild in this small yet imposing, yes, even often extremely inhospitable, piece of New Hampshire's backbone. Thanks for your eloquence in defense of a mountain so dear to so many  of us, on which generations of our tribe have first experienced the challenges and beauty of the high places!
