Black Dike Accident
« on: February 04, 2017, 10:01:53 pm »
A friend on the black dike today said there was a big fall/broken leg/rescue. Anyone know anything about this? Hope all involved are ok...

From someone else's Facebook page:

"...Dude took at 100-footer off the last move of the route and busted his tib/fib just as I was finishing the rock traverse on the second pitch."

The party coming up helped to tandem lower the injured climber to the ground and called for rescue. Fortunately Pemmi Rescue was contacted and came out to effect a litter carry. Winter or summer, Cannon is NOT a place to have an accident.

Best wishes for a swift and complete recovery to the injured climber.

Wishing a speedy recovery to the climber, always a very sad ending to a day that begins with high expectations and energy levels.

Yep, that was me, both axes blew out on the very top move.  I now have a 'very broken' ankle.
Massive thank-yous to all who helped with the rescue, to Fish & Game and Pemi and to everyone who came down off their routes to help with the carry-out.  I am very very grateful.

We did leave quite a lot of gear in the route. If you find it, and want good climbing karma, please give me a call.
Thanks
Nick

From Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team's FB page:

2017-02-04 Callout #1 - Base of Cannon Cliffs, Black Dike climbing route, Franconia Notch. A call came in just before noon Saturday to help a 47 year old man who fell approximately 50 feet when a large block of ice/snow broke free during his climb. He was fortunate, in one sense, that he only suffered a leg injury. NH Fish and Game, PEMI SAR, and around 15 other climbers helped in extracting the man over the talus field below the cliffs. He was loaded into a litter by about 2:30 p.m., and brought to the Franconia Notch bike path in about an hour, where a snowmobile pulled him to a waiting ambulance.

Nick, care to share the details of how you came to fall? (Feel free to ignore this if too soon or too obnoxious . . .)
