Black flies!
« on: May 15, 2017, 10:50:49 am »
They were out, but not biting at Humphries and Shell over the weekend.

I fear that they will be out in force, biting, and driving everyone nuts this weekend... So, where is the best place to climb with the fewest black flies?

Also, be very careful of ticks this year. Personally I have had 2 already, and I DEET myself quite a bit.

Black flies have been out for a couple of weeks here in W mass but haven't been bad due to the cold.  That is going to change this week with the heat   Ticks have been horrible! Ward

I keep hearing about horrible ticks, but I haven't seen one yet down here in southern RI, and I have been out a lot doing yard work and exploring and bouldering in Arcadia and around Beach Pond. I haven't had to use spray for flies or mosquitoes yet either. I am sure that will change soon though, as Ward said.

I was out working in the garden on Sunday and there were blackflies and they were biting! I've also picked up 3 ticks on me from in the yard. strangely none from my bike rides tho. fortunately no mosquitoes yet tho...

DEET, Permethrin, Clothing, Timing.

Honestly the sun-hoody has become my personal insanity saver when they are really bad. Light enough to use when it's hot & muggy out everyone should have one.

I reviewed the new Black Diamond one here: https://northeastalpinestart.com/2017/05/08/gear-review-black-diamond-alpenglow-sun-hoody/

And the classic Patagonia one here: https://northeastalpinestart.com/2016/05/13/patagonia-mens-sunshade-technical-hoodie-review/

I have an Arcteryx one too I haven't had a chance to fully review but I wear it quite a bit.

Permethrin is the BOMB. Been treating clothes with it since jungle warfare training in Okinawa and South America and nothing is more effective!

I rarely bust out DEET because the above two work well but always carry it for vicious days...

I just take a bath in that plasti-dip shit like you would coat an ice tool grip in. Impenetrable to black flies and mosquitoes. Only vulnerable area is the mouth hole, so I swish and gargle 2 oz of DEET. Also, I tape a sausage to my inner thigh before dipping.

two years ago it was so bad that I could hardly go outside at this time of year. between the black flies and the mosquitoes it was unreal. I was at Lost Horizon yesterday and it was terrible. I had on DEET, but they bit me anyway. I wish I had brought a head net!

I've switched to Picardin over DEET as I think it works better. http://amzn.to/2qk8LLp

It's also safer to use around climbing gear, rope, slings, etc.

Not sure what it's been like up in the NoCo area, but here at home (Effingham), the black flies almost all disappeared last weekend.  The mosquitoes took their place though...  As much as the drought sucked last year, we got spoiled with the bugs because of it.

The bugs at Cathedral this weekend were off the charts. If you were at your car or at the north end you would get eaten alive. Once up in the sun it wasn't too bad. We wore our long-sleeve jackets with our hoods up at the north end because it was so brutal.

yes, the black flies aren't too bad, tho they are still out there. however the mosquitoes may be the worst I've ever seen them. totally BRUTAL!!! I was on the bike on Sunday and I couldn't stop at all. even with DEET all over me they were ridiculous.
