While its always the RedSox and Bruins' games to loose, they are both doing pretty darn good right not. It makes it fun to watch right now.

Both can still blow it big time.  Time will tell.  But I am hopeful.

What happened Al? Did you have to watch some hockey to wake you up and keep you from falling asleep during the baseball game?

Bill Buckner.

That is all.

I have not watched a baseball game since that one, so I remember it very well.

Bill Buckner has been made a scapegoat for a game that was already lost.  When that ball went between his legs, the game was tied.  How did the game get tied?  It was not Bill Buckner's fault.

You may recall that the Red Sox were up by two runs, bottom of the 9th, with nobody on base, and two outs.  The Mets' billboard was flashing "CONGRATULATIONS RED SOX....WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!"

The coach (John Macnamara) lost that game.  But if you need a player as a scapegoat then please watch the tape and the name "Bob Stanley" will figure prominently.   He was a mediocre pitcher who had one good year and got a fat contract that he never lived up to.  He was terrible in the clutch, and somehow Macnamara thought he was the go to guy with the series all but in the bag.  When his name was announced my father and I both stood up and shouted "BOB STANLEY?"

By the time Buckner made his error the tides had already turned.  Buckner was in the game for offense only; he had bad knees.  Why did Macnamara leave him in the game instead of playing a pinch fielder?   Macnamara is responsible for the biggest choke in baseball history, and somehow it is remembered as all Bill Buckner's fault.

Remember that even if Buckner had gotten the out, the game would have then gone into extra innings at Met's stadium. After blowing a two run, two out lead in the bottom of the ninth, I doubt the Sox could have pulled it off, just like they lost the next game (that I didn't watch since I knew they would lose)  and the series.

I do credit that game with giving me all that free time that I once wasted watching sports.

Nice play by play and analysis there eyebolter.
Although I never was much of a baseball fan, I was surrounded by a roomfull of true fanatics that day.
Can't say I've seen such stunned people.

And you're right- it wasn't really Buckner's fault.
But f**k it- I'm gonna blame him anyhow.

Actually Ward, if you want a scapegoat his name is Calvin Schiraldi. Two outs in the 9th two strikes, one to go and he couldn't close out the game. I was already drinking the champagne, I seriously was. By the time the bottle was done the Sox were done as well.  I knew that night game 7 would be lost the next day.

Yeah, Schiraldi deserved plenty of blame as well, but when Macnamara put Stanley in I knew it was over. How he could have looked over his options at the biggest decision of his coaching career and then picked Stanley is unbelievable.  I remember the announcer saying "I guess they don't want to use Roger Clemens as they want to rest him in case they need him tomorrow."   My Dad said "Rest?  He only needs one out and he can rest for the next frigging 100 years!"

Fortunately my Dad did get to see them win eventually.

If for some reason I am forced to watch organized team sports I am hard pressed to remember the names of the teams 20 minutes later. I know of Tom Brady (the Patriots QB married to Gesele Budchen, right?), but I can't imagine remembering the score of some game in a particular inning years ago. However, I do know that Flavius Aetius beat Attila the Hun at the battle of Chalons in 451. Now there was some sport!

Freaking 18-5 Sox tonight; gave the Rangers rookie pitcher a royal spanking.
Nolan Ryan probably wished he did not have to watch the game.

17-5 (not 18) - not that I remember the scores of specific games.  Go B's.
