Title: Help a Dinosaur
Post by: strandman on October 30, 2013, 05:43:54 PM
I am thinking about getting a GriGri (the horror) since my wife may do some climbing in the spring (with me hopefully)....The GG2 doesn't work as well with "big" ropes ?? Is this true ?

I use 10mm and 10.5mm mammut almost always..the G1 will be a better choice ?? Or a Cinch ?

thanks;

Dino

I HAVE DONE SOME CLIMBING WITH A GRIGRI 2, I BELIEVE IT WAS ON A 10MM ROPE AND I DIDN'T HAVE ANY  ISSUES. HOPE IT HELPS.

Dunno about the 10.5 but,  Gri Gri 2 with a 10.2 works well.  I doubled checked it a second ago just to be sure.  Petzl says it's gud to 11mm but that seems a wee bit beefy if you ask me.

I've had the same gri gri I bought not long after they came out, and use it all the time.  Never had any issues with it; still works as good as it did when new.

The new one is supposed to be better with skinny ropes.  Since I don't use a skinny rope, if I ever lose mine I will be looking for a replacement instead of buying a new one.

You don't seem to be a skinny rope guy.... that said, the 10 and probably the 10.5 mm would be fine.

I've used mine (GriGri 2) on a 10.5 with no issue at all.

Regular GriGri works great with 10 and 10.5.

John, 10 and 10.2 mm are fine with GG2.
If your wife has smallish hands, GG2 is a little easier to handle and belay with than the original.

Cool ,,thanks.. i bet I can get a G1 for half the money as well......I think 10mm is the smallest I would go except in a alpine situation

I have a better solution John.  Skip the gri-gri and let me take Rose climbing. ;D ;D ;D

I wouldn't normally pile-on with a "me too" but since I've used a substantially thicker rope with a GG2 I think it's worth mentioning:

11.2MM with no problems, though you have to tug pretty hard sometimes to facilitate a clip...

Wait!  Slabbo's using a Grigri?

I am totally buying him a PAS, a cordalette (maybe two!), and some Hand Jammies for Christmas.
Who's in?

I have two web-o-lettes (which are useless for almost anything at all) which you can re-gift to him. I got them free when I had my cams re-outfitted with new slings.

^^ NICE!
We'll give him a whole bunch of 'modern' climbing cra...er, gear and see if we red-line him into getting his pacemaker sooner rather than later.

Although I'll really feel badly if things don't go as planned ....
