Apparently it was a 21 year old man from Fryeburg who committed suicide.

this is not the first time that people have jumped off Cathedral Ledge. several years a go a kid from Fryeburg did the same thing. and a year or 2 before I moved up here, 11-12 years I think, a teacher from the school jumped. what a way to go...

I can't imagine the thoughts that go through a jumper's head.  Just the knowledge that there's no turning back.  It's a long way down...

I don't know if you are thinking of the same incident but the principal at my wife's high school in Portsmouth jumped her senior year which was '96.  Evey time we climb at Catherdral she gets a weird vibe because of it.

One of my former students, a classmate of Luceboy's wife, climbed on the route close to where the principal jumped about a week after.  He ran into a climber who was one of the first on the scene and talked to him about it.  From what he relayed to me it was not pretty.  I also get a little weirded out each time I climb under the tourist lookout.

From what I remember it was the only suicide on the ledge that year.
