Title: Elephant Head Gully May Be No More
Post by: White_Mountain_Rambler on May 24, 2018, 05:29:50 PM
Whomever climbed the gully last this past ice season may hold the unfortunate honor of having logged the last ascent. The rock scaling activities on top of Crawford Notch are currently focusing on the gully area.

Interesting. Yeah maybe something new will form like at rumney when they did that blasting.

I just drove by there and it looks like they will be removing quite a bit of the rock on that side.

Can someone define "rock scaling" for me. They've taken down trees and plucked rocks from that whole side of The road.  It's ok now but maybe they are prepping for blasting?
Not sure when the clifftop anchors were installed at Elephant Head, but it is an improvement.

I drove by twice on Sunday and posted some video on my IG... wish I had more time to stop for some better pics but from what I could see I don't think EHG will be much altered except maybe being even "cleaner" if that is possible.. no tree on on the left and right variations anymore... the whole place has been scraped of any vegetation. This will make that cool little hidden stout gully to the right of EHG much more visible. I'm really curious about how this area will look come late December... I wouldn't be too nervous about it at this point... might actually make for some great climbing...

I was up there Saturday, 6/16/18, an it looked like that they put a fence across the gully, not sure if it's permanent..

Check out this week's White Mountain Report for more info and pictures.

And yes, the fence IS permanent!

Ya know, a little snow and ice around that fence eventually will anchor the fence. Probably make a solid piece or pro. Just clip and go. I wonder if Black Diamond has conducted any pull tests on chain link fence ? Looks like they moved a lot of stuff up there and most likely opened up things for better water flow. I think our glass is half full.

Not for nothing but....with all the climbing available in Crawford Notch, "elephant gully" is really just a little shitbag of an ice climb.

Great old pic! I wish I could see one of this spot before the train corridor was blasted... Definitely one of my favorite places in NH!

Not many 100 foot almost pure ice climbs that have such a short approach... I find this a fun early season route before it gets filled in with snow and a great end-of-day got 30 minutes to spare quickie...

Frist time I drove the Kanc it was a one-lane dirt "fire-road" from about the Hancock/Osceola pull out to Passaconaway.  That would have been about 1963 +/- a yr.

Re   E.Head...I don't think it's going to be too easy the either get around, or over that wire fence.  Maybe we'll need a new rating system, let's see..."WF-1 feels like 5.4-5.5" ....
