Title: Climbing Competitions in North Comway?
Post by: Woody on December 18, 2002, 10:10:47 AM
How come the gym in North Conway doesn't host any climbing comps?  I bet it would be alot of fun with all of the local hardbodies hanging around.

'cause gyms are for wussies who don't outside and appreciate where we live.  try competing with yourself to not ask stupid questions.  then, everyone will win.
:D ;D >:( :o 8) ::) :P :-[ :-X :-/

i heard that cranmore wasn't really into it or that they wanted all the cash....disappointing really. i think comps would be great here in the valley...they are getting really popular, and would bring in more cash and use to the wall ( which hopefully would mean an upgrade)....i think everyone who agrees should make it known down at IME and cranmore and hopefully something could happen...

Frow what I understand, there was a weekly climbing competition (much like the weekly ski race and Cranmore).  I do not know what happened to it, but it seems as if the climbing community in N. Conway is pretty fractured which is too bad.  I think a weekly social/competition would be a great thing for the community.

from what I heard from Brad it just took too much effort for very little return. also Cranmore really puts nothing into the climbing wall.

Well...maybe we should try to put something together.  How many people would be willing to pay, say, a registration fee in order to get into a weekly comp?  You'd have to pay something, since the wall is part of Cranmore and they're not going to let us in for free.  I'd be willing to pay some reasonable fee in order to compete...say $100 or so.  How
'bout anyone else?

I also agree that the community seems pretty fractured in the valley...maybe a comp would be a good way to pull people together...?

If my memory serves me right, the last comp that they hosted was won by a couple of 13 year olds in each of the mens and womens elite categories.  It was pretty embarrasing for the locals, to say the least.  I think they are all afraid to find out how far the rest of the climbing world has left them when it comes to competitions.

I do agree that the comps were alot of fun and served to unite a great crowd of people.  I definately would be willing to participate, particularly if there was an after comp competition to see who could drive an ice pick the deepest into bueno puno...

if cranmore doesn't want to put anything into the wall then they shouldn't get anything out of the wall...the place is outdated anyway and they've been milking it without putting any effort into it for too long...who's up for just building our own rock gym in the valley.....

that's an interesting idea and I've actually thought about it a couple of times...

the problems I see are as follows:

1 - climbers don't want to pay anything for anything

2 - will it be used by anyone in the summer?

3 - will people expect a massive wall like the ones I see in the magazines?

4 - how much do these kinds of structures cost? my understanding is that they are pretty darn expensive.

5 - should it be affiliated with someplace like Attitash or a local gym so that it has a "guaranteed" clientel?

6 - can it make money with the above limitations?

7 - climbers don't want to pay anything for anything

8 - is it an oxymoron, a climbing gym in North Conway?

hmmm...

What it comes down to is management and psyche, plain and simple. North Conway has a huge influx of tourists, business meetings, vacationers, and climbers. There is a client base for climbers, team building sessions, birthday parties, camps, etc. However, the current gym is tucked in the back of Canmore, there is no active management or manager for the gym that is with the wall 24-7, no advertising of any sort, no real route setting, no new holds, and plus their is no climbing society within the local climbing culture that is psyched up enough to do anything about it without getting paid . Maybe the real rock climbing around North Conway has a perception of not being inspiring to the climbing culture that exists here? We have tons of good rock and tons of boulders, lots of bad weather (perfect for indoor climbing), but there are only a select few that see and percive the resource that makes people want to go into gyms and pull on bad holds until they can't feel their arms a couple of times per week.

Not to be too stereotypical but North Conway is back water. It is not a urban/urbane place with climbers that have office jobs and want to go to the gym after work and take laps on 5.13c's like they do in a lot of places besides North Conway. It is a town of climbers living off the tourist industry. People would much rather go outside and ice climb, take a hike in the Whites, or get a couple cold ones, rather than pull plastic in a dusty gym under sodium lights. That is very understandable and a good thing. North Conway is not Chamonix or Boulder. So I guess what it comes down to is the culture or the individual, or an individual that wants to make an investment and create a (paying) and psyched culture in the future.

A real gym couldn't support itself in North Conway.  You'd need a bigger population base and easy access to a college crowd to have half a shot.
