LATE BREAKING NEWS

On Tuesday, July 15th, 2008 a sizable chunk of rock fell from Otter Cliffs. The rockfall happened overnight and there were no injuries or witnesses to the event. The rockfall happened in the Gallery area. The following are climbs that no longer exist:
    Black Crack 5.7
    Riptide 5.11+
Sharpen Up AKA Razor Crack 5.8

Climbers were on the affected climbs the previous day and fortunately the giant block didn't let loose while anyone was on it.

National Park Service personnel trundled the last remaining threatening boulder Saturday morning. The newly exposed rock face is currently closed to climbing until further stability assessments are made, though climbs on either side of the fall are open.

Please use caution when lowering into the Gallery area as the recently fallen rock is still quite unstable.

Wow, that really sucks.  It definitely could have been pretty tragic if it had fallen during the day, though.  I shudder to think...

Thanks for the post and the picture.  Wow...  Razor Crack was a really nice climb  Sad

I don't know how I would react to that if I was the guy climbing it the day before... but it would probably involve a tremendous about of booze...

It was pretty impressive standing in the gallery looking at a beautiful blank spot on the wall. I remembered how well Razor Crack was and I tried to envision the rock coming off. The largest block that resulted from the collapse is currently sitting on adjacent to the south side of the pillar. The Gallery has it's own distinct smell now. A fresh earthy smell mixed with sweet salt-air.

Better get the Sea Stack (Rock Lobster) while it's still there!

Climbed Overhanging Corner the afternoon before the fall and that appears to be not so overhanging anymore. I guess steming over to that wall wasn't such a great idea after all.

Climbed the Pancake Flake on the Nose the day before a guy pulled a big chunk out of it and took a 2500+ footer.  I watched if from El Cap Meadows.  Grim.

I've climbed the Gendarme, The Old Man, a 100' tower outside Pheonix, the block on top of the Yellow Wall, and now that wall in Acadia that have all fallen off. I'm sure there are probably more but I can't remember 'em. I'm sure there is other stuff on Cannon I climbed that has since fallen off.

It would be interesting to see a list of climbs that no longer exist. Anybody else have any?
