Although we had gotten occasional glimpses of the final section
as we climbed, I was completely unprepared for just how big the
3rd Tier actually was. Joe Josephson's guide describes it as 1-1/2
pitches of climbing, culminating with the crux grade 5 section.
To our exhausted eyes it looked almost as wide as the Weeping Wall
and as tall. We had set a 3PM turnaround and it was just after 2
when we got to the base of it so we decided to call it a day. We
weren't sure how the rappels would go and in a moment of fast-and-light
hubris had left our packs and headlamps at the base of the first
pitch. So, after taking a number of pictures and eating a snack
we called it a day.
Interestingly enough there were bolts on the rock under the hole
in the curtain on the left. It looked as if someone had been working
on a mixed line that climbed up the rock and then got on the curtain
from the back. I'd sure love to see them do it!
The picture doesn't do justice to the size of the final curtain.
Due to foreshortening it looks fairly small, but I assure you it
is anything but.
