Crack In The Woods Cliff: Rock Routes grouped by Area, sorted by Name
Description: This rather obscure crag off the Kancamagus Highway harbors one of the most aesthetic and spectacular cracks in the area, the appropriately named Crack In The Woods. Discovered by Joe Cote in the early 70's, it can also be one of the more difficult climbs to find - second only to Crag Y. Generations of fledgling crack climbers have spent hours thrashing through the woods looking for this hidden gem.
Directions: Obviously the best way to find it is to go with someone who has been there before. That said, go north on the Kanc and just past the Rocky Gorge look for a dirt pullout on a curve. This is also where you park for the Way In The Wilderness ice climb on the Painted Walls. Go down the steep bank and cross the Swift River, if it's shallow enough. Bushwack uphill to the trail/logging road that runs parallel to the river. Turn right and walk a short distance looking for a small drainage on your left, just past a couple of waterbars. There generally is no cairn to mark the place you turn! Hike uphill, trending slightly left and start looking for the crag.
