Ice Update - November 16, 2017
I got up at 5:30, grabbed some cereal, grabbed a coffee at the Frontside and headed up to the Notch to check things out. As I left town it started snowing lightly, getting heavier as I went along. By the time I got past Bartlett it was obvious that getting any really good pictures was going to be doubtful. Pulling into the Dry River Campground where I take pics of the Amphitheater, I could make out the climbs, but they were hard to really see. It was the same at the Standard Route pullout and Dracula. Further up I couldn't even see Willies Slide or anything on Mt Willard! I took pictures anyway, boping I could tweak them, but it wasn't promising. I was able to get pics of Snot Rocket and the trestle cut by pulling into the viewing area. Coming back down past Standard I stopped again and was able to get a little better shot than previously.

I pulled into the Arethusa lot and decided I'd take my tools for a walk & check out Standard up close. I checked out the thermometer that's hung on the sign and it showed a fraction above freezing. The snow kept coming down as I walked along and I flicked lots of sticks and limbs off the tracks as I went. I'm kind of thinking that I might try riding the fat tire bike down there the next time! It was snowing harder at the trestle and my cell phone couldn't get any better pictures than the big Canon from the road. Too bad...

Walking past Waterfall I could see some hunks of ice on the tracks. I got to Standard and it was obvious that there were holes in the ice everywhere with lots of water running and lots of daggers up high. I decided I'd walk up the hill to see if there was any way I could safely climb up to the cave, but it didn't look good to me. So I retraced my steps downhill and headed back. I also noticed that the ground is definitely NOT frozen at all. You can kick into the dirt and the gravel on the RR bed is loose. So... I would say that the climbs at Frankenstein are forming, but are not IN at this time. That said, if we don't get the predicted major rain, and it actually gets cold on Friday, things might continue to form over the next several days and something might be reasonably climbable by Saturday. But I'm not promising anything folks.

Starting last weekend some of the usual suspects have been climbed such as the Black Dike, Fafnir, The Open Book in Tucks, Pinnacle Gully and Standard Route at Frankenstein! However, that is certainly not to say that they are IN. In fact even the parties who climbed them, have all admitted that they are not in very reasonable shape. Parties have been up to try to repeat these, only to find them to not be climbable at that time. HEY, it's early season, and all bets are off.
