November 26, 2020

Hi Folks,

I drove up into the Notch Wednesday, knowing that the weather was going to turn to crap Thursday. And of course I wasn't surprised. It is a sloppy mess out there right now. There was ice, but IMO not climbable. Of course as soon as I say that I'm sure someone will get on something like Dropline, just to prove me wrong. Will that be you? LOL

So it's Thanksgiving, it's been raining all day and we're in a pandemic. DAMN!!! Here's to wishing each and every one of you a safe and happy Thanksgiving. These are the most difficult times I've experienced in my 73 years. but I'm confident that as along as we pay attention and do the right things, we will come out on the other side. As my good friend Gary says: "Continue to stay positive, and test negative..." Great words to live by these days. It's a difficult time for everyone, but I do everything I can to keep in a positive state of mind. Things WILL get better.

INSTANT ICE REPORT:
YUP, the ice has been forming in the notches and the higher elevations, tho nothing here in the Valley. People have been climbing in Tucks, Pinnacle and I even heard that there was reasonable ice on Mt Avalon - tho that's a slog. That said, it's not clear where things will be after this weekend's rain and warmup. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. At least all this sure puts some water in the system. [wry grin] Here's some pix from Wednesday...

2020/2021 FUNDRAISER:
Hard to believe that it's already Thanksgiving folks! I bid a very big thanks to all the generous supporters who have donated to the annual fundraiser. I appreciate it so very much. I updated the current Donation page on NEClimbs.com a few days ago and thank you all once again for your consideration.

The time and expense of the running and maintaining NEClimbs.com and putting out The White Mountain Report continue all year, but I only ask for donations once. In the winter I put in at least 5 hours every Thursday driving up into the Notch, taking the pictures, processing them, writing the Report, posting the pix on NEClimbs and FaceBook and putting out the email newsletter Report. It's an effort that I do enjoy, but PLEASE REMEMBER, it's your contribution that makes this newsletter and the NEClimbs web site viable.

BTW You can see almost all of the Reports on NEClimbs.com archived from as far back as September of 1999! To get a sense of the popularity of the site, current traffic as of October 29 2020 on NEClimbs.com is about 126,000 UNIQUE visits a day, generating almost 2 million monthly "HITS". The White Mountain Report newsletter goes out every week to over 1,200 subscribers weekly!

Thank you once again for your support...

SOME LOCAL/NATIONAL PANDEMIC THOUGHTS:
On this Thanksgiving day there are now 12,441,925 confirmed cases in the US with 257,825 American citizens dead. According to the World Health Organization there are 1,410,378 reported deaths world-wide from the Corona Virus as of Thursday November 26th. On Wednesday the 25th, New Hampshire reported 394 new cases of the virus and a positivity rate of 5.37%!!!! That's really significant folks. We are experiencing a major escalation in the number of cases and it is critical that people take this seriously. Even tho is not the some people get it and recover easily, it is NOT the flu.

The Governor has issued a MASK MANDATE for the state of NH. Even tho it basically has no teeth, and there are those who resist it, it is making a difference. I see a lot more folks wearing masks. In spite of that, there are a group of Republicans-Free Staters who are talking up the idea of impeaching Sununu for the mandate. Insanity reigns...

And for those of you from Massachusetts, check out your restrictions. As I understand it, if you come to New Hampshire you are supposed to quarantine when you return!

I find JHU's Daily COVID-19 Data in Motion report to be very informative. It shares critical data on COVID-19 from the last 24 hours in a short 1 minute animated video format.

WEAR A MASK, SANITIZE AND STAY PHYSICALLY DISTANT FRIENDS!

REMEMBER - WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER

VALLEY CYCLING:
In general it's been cold, but I've managed lots of local rides this week, including one up the road to the top of Cathedral Ledge. The little bridge on the Electric Loop on the West side got repaired this week, so that's a good thing. I rode the fat tire bike down the tracks to Frankenstein on Friday and as always that was fun. If there is just a little more snow covering the ties, it will be more comfortable. FWIW it's almost exactly 1 mile from the top of the parking lot to Dracula. I'm really looking forward to the time when I can ride down and climb Standard. Always good fun.

Mobile Version Of NEClimbs:
Up on one of the Mount Washington Valley's finest crags and want to know what that climb you're looking at is? Or maybe you're on your way up from Boston and want to check out the Ice Report for your upcoming weekend plans. Or more likely, you're at work just want to daydream about your next adventure. Well if you have a smart phone handy, you can get to NEClimbs from anywhere you have cell service. While it doesn't offer every single feature of the site and it's not an "app", in mobile form, it does do a whole lot and is very useful. Here is the live link to the mobile version of NEClimbs:
