Hi Folks,

This week has been crazy up and down weather-wise. I mean it's been that way all summer, but just when it seems we might turn the corner, we get clobbered again. It rained some during the day on Tuesday, but then unleashed late in the day. I recorded 1" in about an hour here at the cliffs, but Jackson got 4"! It was totally nuts...with lots of wind and many branches coming down all over the place. And RIGHT NOW at Thursday at 9pm, as I'm writing this, it's totally pouring!

I had my regular gig at Saco River Brewing on Wednesday and the weather was beautiful. Of course I p[didn't have time for any outdoor activities. However today I got over to Cranmore for some downhill after I finished all my chores. I did a couple of runs on my own and then met up with my buddy Phil O. We did another 4 runs and then decided to do the cross-mountain connector to get over to the Hurricane Zone to check out the status of Tornado. It is always a moderate pound across the mountain and when we got to the Kettle-Connector we sat down for a break and some water. We're sitting there and chatting when we saw someone coming up the trail with a bike wheel in their hand! Turns out it was a young lady who'd had a flat and was unable to get the valve stem out of the rim because the little screw locker was stripped. Fortunately Phil and I each had a Leatherman tool and we able to get it off. Her wheel was tubless, but fortunately she had a spare tube and was able to get things back up and running.

The particularly interesting thing to us was that she was not from the area, had been riding with 3 female friends, they had been ahead of her and not stopped when they realized she wasn't behind them any more! GO FIGURE... There were at least 3 places where I would have stopped and waited for my partners to catch up! The place we saw her was at a intersection and she didn't know where her friends had gone. In addition it was around 2:30 when we came across her and it wasn't clear that anyone else would have come along after us. I've seen this kind of thing happen with hikers as well, and it's the way that people get in trouble. Of course all she had to do was to keep going downhill to get to the Hurricane Highway, where she could go left to Cranmore and right to Hurricane Mountain Road. Plus she did have a cell phone. But being new in the area, she didn't know where she was. SIGH Just a thought...

RUMNEY CRAGGIN' CLASSIC - September 15-17::
This 3-day grassroots climbing festival brings climbers from all over New England to Rumney, one of the oldest premiere sport climbing destinations in the United States. Challenge yourself on the schist and get after some of the most iconic routes in New England.

Come spend time with your community, give back to our local crags, and learn new skills. We pride ourselves on the fact that the Craggin’s are a party with a heart, so these walls are also hosting climbing clinics taught by professional athletes and skilled certified climbing instructors and a chance to make the Earth a little better with a stewardship project hosted in partnership with The Rumney Climbers’ Association.

Of course, it wouldn’t be the epic celebration that it is today without our Vendor Village, local craft beer and food, gear giveaways and demos, games, raffles, and an epic bonfire by the river. What makes these events truly exceptional is the community of friendly folks who show up to celebrate our shared love of vertical pursuits. Rain or shine, we’re going to have a great time.

INSTANT BUG REPORT - 2:
Evening can be brutal, but overall the bugs aren't too bad. Thank goodness...

VALLEY CYCLING:
There is a LOT of salvage-logging on the east side trails right now. DARN! But the West side has been generally OK. The Cranmore downhill trails aren't bad, other than a few ruts here and there. Those get repaired fairly regularly, but the storms that keep coming through don't help. I rode across the mountain and down Tornado this afternoon and there certainly were some muddy spots on the Kettle Connector and some standing water here & there on Tornado. It all seems to be pretty standard for this summer. SHEESH

Remember - climb hard, ride the twisty stuff, wear a helmet, stay safe - and above all BE NICE.
