I woke up at 5:30 this morning. It was pitch black and stayed that way until 6:30! When it finally got light enough to see outside, there was a very dense fog that kept me from even seeing very far down the street. Looking out back I couldn't see Cathedral Ledge, and that's really only a few hundred yards away from my back deck. It didn't burn off until around 10:30!
Welp, as you certainly know, it's Leaf Peeper time up here in the hinterlands. I think that on this side of Mt Washington we are still 5-7 days from what should be peak foliage. From my understanding full colors have come in in Franconia, and I will say that the tourists are everywhere. Busses and visitors are on the road acting like the fools they are. I would never in a million years be on a road bike right now. That said, I took a ride up through the Notch this morning to get a few pictures. I will admit that I added some saturation to them to make them pop a bit, otherwise they would be a bit dull. There aren't any from the valley because there is a haze in the air that would make them look pret-ty funky.
I also posted a little Video Report on Instagram and Face Book. Enjoy...
Ice Conditions Report:
Selected Ice Conditions effective November 27, 2025
There is minimal snow up in Crawford Notch. The pictures below are from Wednesday. While I drove through the notch today, I didn't bring a camera. However there is substantially less ice up there than there was yesterday. Mid day Wednesday it was 46 degrees at the Dry River Campground and 41 at the Highland Center. It rained a bit overnight as well. Today it was 40 at the Center! I have seen some great pictures of Pinnacle Gully from earlier in the week, but none from yesterday or today. That said, things will most certainly get better as the weekend goes on.

INSTANT BUG REPORT - 1:
No real change since last week. Pretty minimal bugs of any kind, tho I'd still leave the bug dope in the pack.
VALLEY CYCLING:
The riding has been great this week, even tho it's been more like summer than fall. That said, after what we've been through all summer I will take every minute of it. NOTE - the Cranmore Bike Park will be closed following Oct 9th.
Remember - climb hard, ride the twisty stuff, wear a helmet, stay safe - and above all BE NICE.
Mobile Version Of NEClimbs:
Up on one of the Mount Washington Valley's finest crags and want to know what that climb you're looking at is? Or maybe you're on your way up from Boston and want to check out the Ice Report for your upcoming weekend plans. Or more likely, you're at work just want to daydream about your next adventure. Well if you have a smart phone handy, you can get to NEClimbs from anywhere you have cell service. While it doesn't offer every single feature of the site and it's not an "app", in mobile form, it does do a whole lot and is very useful. Here is the live link to the mobile version of NEClimbs:
Check it out and if you have issues on your specific phone, please feel free to let me know.

The solitary ascent of the Dru had the immediate effect of expanding the horizons of my ideas about mountaineering. It made me aware of possibilities well in advance of the times, which were characterized by very restricted mothods. This was how the suberb pyramid of K2 surfaced once more in the list of my projects. But I chose K2 as a way for giving concrete form to my new concept of mountaineering: to climb the second highest montain in the world solo, alpine style, and without oxygen.
Climbing is a very dangerous sport. You can get hurt or even kill yourself. When you go climbing, you do so of your own free will. Everything on this site is to be taken with a grain of salt. Don't blame us if you get up some totally heinous route, in over your head and fall and hurt yourself.
