As you all surely know we had another rain event last Sunday-Monday. In that we got over 1 1/2" and it warmed up a bit, so many things fell down. Here in the valley there is very little snow left on the ground other than in the shady places. I hate to be the bearer of bad news...but according to the weather peeps a similar event is on tap for the first of this coming week! [sigh] Tuesday prediction...
Needless to say there is a gracious plenty of "water in the system" at this point, so all we need is some consistent cold temps and we will be good to go. This kind of thing isn't totally unheard of, take a look through the archives, but it certainly frustrating. I hate to keep saying "stay tuned", but that's all we can do.
TRAIN UPDATE:
The train situation MAY be resolved for THIS season. The Scenic RR will be running up to Attitash this winter but it doesn't look as if they will be further than that this year. I stopped in at the Bartlett snowmachine rental and they said that they were going to be allowed to use the tracks from January 18 to ~March 13. That implies that the train won't be running above Attitash during that time. What happens next year is still unknown. And prior to January 18, be aware that a train MAY come through! So keep your eyes and ears open and UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES leave gear on or next to the tracks. The club has been clearing Sawyer River Road and will start their grooming process after this weekend. They have groomed Bear Notch Road and are working on the MeadowBrook Connector.
Selected Ice Conditions effective November 27, 2025
There is minimal snow up in Crawford Notch. The pictures below are from Wednesday. While I drove through the notch today, I didn't bring a camera. However there is substantially less ice up there than there was yesterday. Mid day Wednesday it was 46 degrees at the Dry River Campground and 41 at the Highland Center. It rained a bit overnight as well. Today it was 40 at the Center! I have seen some great pictures of Pinnacle Gully from earlier in the week, but none from yesterday or today. That said, things will most certainly get better as the weekend goes on.

SHAMELESS PLUG:
I'm really happy I have the music thing happening while waiting on the ice. My band and I will be jamming at Big Day Brewing in Gorham this Friday 6-9. Great beers and good food! Then I will be doing a trio with my piano player and drummer for an apres ski/fat bike ride on Saturday 6-8:30. They have a variety of local beers and you can get your bike or skis tuned while you enjoy...
VALLEY CYCLING:
Bear Notch Road has been groomed for snowmachines and it looks fine for fat biking. Sawyer River Road has been cleared and there are truck tracks up there, making it OK as well. My understanding is Rogers Crossing near Thorne Pond in Bartlett is also groomed and rideable, but I haven't done it yet.

This is how they die, I thought. They pass out or freeze without caring. They die as spectators, believing it's all happening to someone else. I'd rather be fully alive and awake when I die, I want to be terrified. The last place I want to snuff it is on a slope no steeper than a beginner's ski hill.
Climbing is a very dangerous sport. You can get hurt or even kill yourself. When you go climbing, you do so of your own free will. Everything on this site is to be taken with a grain of salt. Don't blame us if you get up some totally heinous route, in over your head and fall and hurt yourself.
