Hi Folks,
Dare I ask you...so what is it about the good weather mostly coming on Tuesdays? And of course why do I seem to always have actual work to do on the singular really nice day of the week? And of course now this upcoming weekend looks iffy. [GRRRR] Let's hope for a better spring than we had last year.
I've been out working in the yard quite a bit and things are mostly minimal. But I just gotta figure that as soon as things warm up we will be in major black-fly mode. So I have already added the serious bug dope into my Camelback. And of course I'm constantly checking for ticks since they are already out there! Be warned...
Steve will be giving a talk on Mountaineering at 6pm on May 15 at the Wolfeboro Library. He is somewhat of a legend in the Mount Washington Valley, having established Pendulum, a big wall route on Cathedral in 1967 as well as Cro Magnon and Jane at Crow Hill (MA), Intimidation and Book Of Solemnity (Cathedral Ledge, NH) and VMC Direct Direct (Cannon, NH). He has also done extensive climbing in the Wind River Range.
A series of low pressures will pass south of New England on Thursday. The bulk of precipitation associated with these lows should remain farther to our south, but moisture from a northeasterly flow will lead to continued clouds and a chance of showers at the valley on Thursday. Then, low pressure will drop through the Ohio River Valley overnight on Thursday, with the low passing through the Mid-Atlantic States on Friday. A broad upper-level trough over the Northeast may allow for showers on Friday, resulting in a slight chance for showers at the valley during the afternoon. Mostly cloudy conditions and the chance for showers may linger at the valley through Friday night, with another wave approaching from the west possibly aiding in some more shower development on Saturday.

So strange that I only have a few gigs this month! I'll be at the Randolph Town 200th Festival on May 25th with the Jim McLaughlin Group and then with Dave Lockwood and Jared Steer at the Majestic Cafe in Conway Village on May 31st. Both are very different, and will be lots of fun.

The trails are still a mixed bag. The main trails both East & West Side have pretty much all been cleared. Others still have a lot of blowdown, not to mention the low-lying muddy sections here & there. The higher areas like Twilight Zone are generally fine. Frankly it shouldn't take long for things to dry out, once we get several dry days. Stay tuned...
Up on one of the Mount Washington Valley's finest crags and want to know what that climb you're looking at is? Or maybe you're on your way up from Boston and want to check out the Ice Report for your upcoming weekend plans. Or more likely, you're at work just want to daydream about your next adventure. Well if you have a smart phone handy, you can get to NEClimbs from anywhere you have cell service. While it doesn't offer every single feature of the site and it's not an "app", in mobile form, it does do a whole lot and is very useful. Here is the live link to the mobile version of NEClimbs:

If I have learned one thing in my 54 years, it is that it is very good for the character to engage in sports which put your life in danger from time to time. It breeds a saneness in dealing with day to day trivialities which probably cannot be got in any other way, and a habit of quick decisions. |
