Hi Folks,
So what are YOU doing right now? Are you climbing, hiking, riding - or what? Every time I look at a weather report, I feel like getting outside isn't a great idea. But then, it seems to turn out that we only get a minor and brief shower, and before I know it things dry out. Whatever your plan is, my recommendation is to just DO IT. Even if the sky looks funky GET ON IT...
The bugs are certainly swarming around, but are they biting yet? It seems to depend on where you are. I've been out riding several times and had no real issues, even when I stopped. I did some work in the yard yesterday, didn't put on any bug dope and just waved the bugs out of my face. BUT, a short walk in the woods behind the house later in the evening yielded several bites on my neck and right arm. Go figure... I can't really figure the difference, but having the bug spray close at hand is likely a smart move.
Low pressure will remain quasi-stationary to our south on Thursday as high pressure builds down from the north and an upper-level trough approaches from the west overnight through Friday. Thursday, we will see an area of low pressure meandering offshore east of the Delmarva Peninsula. This will continue to spread clouds northward, with rain spreading northward as well. As of this morning, the bulk of the rain looks to remain south of the White Mountains; however, ample low-moisture and diurnally driven instability could lead to a few convective cells around the mountains during the afternoon, leading to isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. Clouds will remain thick Thursday morning, but high pressure building down from the north will aid in thinning cloud cover in the north a bit during the day, which should lead to limited sunshine. Temperatures will rebound to above normal, and winds will remain low for the day. Thursday night, wet and unsettled weather lingers initially, but a drying pattern is expected to gradually develop, allowing for additional clearing overhead. Friday will start with some sunshine as the ridge crests, but clouds will soon spread back in as an upper-level trough approaches from the west for the afternoon and overnight. Diurnal instability along the trough's leading edge could lead to afternoon showers or thunderstorms on Friday. Wet and unsettled weather is expected to linger overnight before tapering briefly. Temperatures will continue to be slightly above normal; however, increasing winds Friday and Friday night will make it feel significantly cooler on exposed skin, with exposure risks possible.

You can often find things on YouTube that you can't find otherwise. Here's two very cool videos/movies that are must-see for any climber. Have you seen Rob Frost's classic movie UNCOMMON GROUND from 2002? I don't believe that the DVD is still in print and apparently someone has unloaded it to YouTube. If you haven't seen it, I strongly urge you to check it out NOW before it gets taken down!

AND, here's one of a free ascent of The Prow on Cathedral Ledge featuring Chris Gill and Steve Damboise shot in 1991 by Thom Pollard. So very cool...

On the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend I'll be playing with the Jim McLaughlin Group for the 200 year celebration of the town of Randolph. There are 2 bands and a lot of stuff going on. The first band starts at 1pm, and we play from 3-5. The address is 560 Route 2, at Bradley's Farm near Durand Road.

I rode one of the Marshall loops 2 days ago and it was great. Upper and lower Shumway was excellent as well.
Up on one of the Mount Washington Valley's finest crags and want to know what that climb you're looking at is? Or maybe you're on your way up from Boston and want to check out the Ice Report for your upcoming weekend plans. Or more likely, you're at work just want to daydream about your next adventure. Well if you have a smart phone handy, you can get to NEClimbs from anywhere you have cell service. While it doesn't offer every single feature of the site and it's not an "app", in mobile form, it does do a whole lot and is very useful. Here is the live link to the mobile version of NEClimbs:

Check it out and if you have issues on your specific phone, please feel free to let me know.
Join us and LIKE us on Facebook. I'll try and post interesting pix every Thursday and the latest Ice Report in the season, tho certainly not the whole Report. Here's where you can check it out:

Nobody climbs mountains for scientific reasons. Science is used to raise money for the expeditions, but you really climb for the hell of it. |
