December 1, 2025

Hi Folks,

It's finally feeling like winter friends, here we are all white and fluffy at last. The recent storm dropped about 7" of light stuff up here in the Valley. It wasn't that difficult to snowplow and shovel thank goodness. I had to drive over to Portland Wednesday at 6am and the roads were reasonably clear! Even in Maine... My understanding is that there was a lot more to our south and that it was heavy and wet.

2025/2026 FUNDRAISER:
HELLO FRIENDS - It's definitely time for my annual Fundraiser for NEClimbs and The White Mountain Report. Like every year for the past 15 or so, I humbly ask you readers and subscribers for a small donation. Tho I have been doing this report since 1999, I didn't always ask for donations! That started in 2004. And realistically folks, without your support and as much as I actually like doing it, it would be very difficult to justify keeping it going.

Year-round I put out my weekly White Mountain Reports on Facebook, Instagram and the NEClimbs web site. But I usually do the fundraiser only for 4-5 issues of the Report. It's kind of like those pesky NPR fundraisers. [wry grin] Keeping you up to date with happenings in the Whites, providing the latest ice and rock conditions, reporting on events and people in the local climbing community and more consumes at least 6 hours a week. That's not insignificant for anyone, and I'm just like every other overworked, semi-retired 78 year old dude you know.

I always request a $20 donation, which isn't a heck-of-a-lot, is it? That's not even 1/2 a tank of low-test gas or a couple of latte's at the Frontside! Don't wait to make YOUR contribution. and don't assume that others will pick up the slack. YOU are the one who signed up to be included on the mailing list! YOU read it every week, and I'm the one putting in the time to make it happen!

Thus - PLEASE support NEClimbs and The White Mountain Report. Make a contribution ON LINE via PayPal OR send your check or money order for $20 right now. It's easy it's painless and you can use your credit/debit card. Simply click the link below to make your donation... THANK YOU

DONATE PLEASE...
Ice Conditions Report:
Selected Ice Conditions effective December 15, 2025
Took a quick ride into the Notch Monday morning. There was a lot more climbable stuff than on Thursday. At this rate by the weekend many things will be in normal IN conditions.Weather permitting of course. NOTE - possibility of rain late Thursday! FWIW In many placed right now, including my yard, the ground is simply NOT fully frozen. Please don't count on getting those solid turf-shots... Protect early and often!
Huntington Ravine got some good stuff

MT WASHINGTON OBSERVATORY VALLEY WEATHER:
An arctic cold front passes on Thursday, followed by building high pressure on Friday. Thursday will have scattered snow showers passing ahead of the cold front. Snowfall totals are expected to be light, but as the front passes, a few squalls could develop, providing pockets of moderate to heavy snow and additional snow accumulations. Snowfall is expected to be low-density once again, so as winds increase, blowing snow is likely. And temperatures will be warm enough south of Concord that a few light rain showers could be in the mix. Thursday's warmest temperatures will occur during the morning, then, as the front passes, temperatures will fall during the day, bottoming out Thursday night. In addition to the cold, winds will be ramping up on Thursday and into Thursday night. These high winds will make the cold air feel even colder on exposed skin, and frostbite could develop with prolonged exposures.

Behind the front, high pressure will start to build northward. Drier air will be in the mix, allowing a clearing pattern to develop late Thursday night into Friday. Despite the added sunshine on Friday, temperatures will only gradually improve throughout the day. A zonal flow will keep winds elevated Friday morning, then dampen in the afternoon. Friday night, clear and calm conditions will allow for another cold night, but temperatures will not be as cold as they were on Thursday night, and the lack of winds will dampen the bite on exposed skin. https://mountwashington.org/weather/regional-weather/mount-washington-valley-weather/

MUSICAL NOTES
Guitarist Jarrod Taylor and I will be playing duo at Tuckerman Brewing on Friday from 4-7pm. Unlike the last several years they no longer are having full bands inside in the winter, but I'm happy to be there regardless. I imagine we will be playing a lot of jazz, but some funky stuff as well. It will be fun so please swing by if you can.

If you are at all interested in what else is coming up with me musically, you can always see my schedule here: http://www.alhospers.com/?PageName=2

VALLEY CYCLING:
I have my regular fat bike all good to go with the studded tires and got out for a little shake-down spin yesterday and then rode down to the North End of Cathedral Ledge this afternoon to check on the ice status. The snow is pretty soft, so those big tires are good for that. My buddy Chris Krugh at East Side Bike Guides is putting studded tires on my Yamaha eBike as well. I understand that the Marshall trails have been groomed so I have to get over there in the next day or two.

Mobile Version Of NEClimbs:
Up on one of the Mount Washington Valley's finest crags and want to know what that climb you're looking at is? Or maybe you're on your way up from Boston and want to check out the Ice Report for your upcoming weekend plans. Or more likely, you're at work just want to daydream about your next adventure. Well if you have a smart phone handy, you can get to NEClimbs from anywhere you have cell service. While it doesn't offer every single feature of the site and it's not an "app", in mobile form, it does do a whole lot and is very useful. Here is the live link to the mobile version of NEClimbs:

Check it out and if you have issues on your specific phone, please feel free to let me know.
